Good writing is the best way to get attention, attract more clients, grow your business, show people you’re a pro at what you do, and beat any and all competition.
Great thing is that you don’t have to master it. You just have to be good enough. Truth is, most writing sucks. It’s boring and lame.
And we don’t care why that is. We care about becoming decent writers.
I’ll show you three rules that will turn you from “boring and lame” into “word wizard”.
The first rule is to make it easy to read.
Attention makes you money
School taught us that the more complicated words we use, the smarter we sound. And that couldn’t be more wrong.
Consider this:
First sentence in this post was “You want to be considered an expert? Write a book.”
Imagine you opened this article and it starts with:
“You want to establish yourself as an authority in your field? Author a comprehensive treatise.”
Would you continue reading? Unless you are an English teacher, your answer is no. That’s because writing is supposed to grab your attention, not make you fall asleep.
The Simple Mistake That’s Ruining Your Writing
You could write the best article ever, but if you don't have line breaks, nobody will read it.
There’s a reason hardly anyone reads newspapers nowadays. Long text, small font, no line breaks.
No sane person wants to read that. You look at that page and your brain says: ‘Pfffffffff, are we going to have to wade through all that?’
Look at this article, it looks clean, right? Good structure, no heavy words, short sentences. It just flows.
That doesn’t mean you should always use three-word sentences. Or add line breaks after each one. You don’t want to make readers feel like a little kid. Just be aware of these things and try to find a perfect balance between two extremes.
Another thing you can do to grab people's attention is this: After every sentence you write, ask yourself a question “Would I like to know what comes next?”
If yes, great.
If no, change it.
Make this a habit and you will see immediate results.
Write Like A Human, Not Like An Alien
Apart from that, always keep in mind that you are writing to humans. Not robots and not aliens. That means you should use words you would use in a real human-to-human conversation.
If you’re not sure about some words, a good rule of thumb is to read your writing out loud to check if it flows.
I will talk more about this in the next two posts, where I’ll cover the other two rules.
