In the last article, we talked about the first rule of writing – making it easy to read. If you haven’t read it, it’s here:
Rule 2: Keep their attention.
Now, after we get them to start reading, our next goal is something that most writers struggle with – keeping readers’ attention. The problem is that the attention span is the lowest in the history of mankind.
Good thing is, if you master the art of grabbing attention, it puts you above 97% of your competition.
Use The BAR Test To Improve Your Writing
There’s an easy way to make sure that every time you write, you are part of the top 3%.
How?
Do the legendary test – The BAR test.
It has worked for centuries and will work for centuries more. Even if there are no more bars in the future, this test will still work.
“So, how do I test it?”
It's simple. Look at the piece of text and ask yourself: “Would I say this to a person in a bar?”
It works every single time.
Not only does it improve flow, but it also helps keep attention. It’s quite sad that the average blog post sounds like it was written by drunk AI. You try to read a sentence, and it’s so long that you forget what it is about.
I know that, because most of my clients were writing like that. Then they would ask me why nobody reads their blog. And I can’t blame them, they didn’t know about the BAR test.
If you are in the same situation as my clients, I have great news for you.
Every single time they started using these three writing rules, they saw a massive increase in views and interactions.
That means you can achieve the same.
Do This To Make Your Writing Even Better
If you are not sure whether something passes the BAR test, there’s one thing you can do to make sure.
Read your text out loud.
If you stumbled across some words, rewrite them. Doing this combined with a BAR test brought the most results for my clients. Writing becomes smooth and words flow into one another. It makes it quite difficult to stop reading.
We’ve covered two rules, and you are already miles ahead of your competitors. There’s only one more rule that separates you from being a true word wizard.
I’ll be covering it in the next article, so be ready.
