Whenever you write something, the most important thing is to grab attention.
If you fail at that, nothing else matters because nobody will read it.
But that is only a first step.
When you get readers’ attention, you still have to keep it.
That’s what I am gonna talk about in this article – How to make your readers’ glued to their screen, unable to stop consuming your content.
Make It Easy To Read
There is a reason why nobody reads newspapers anymore. Big chunks of small text with no space.
No sane person would read that.
And when you consider that modern attention span is a 10 seconds tik tok video… you can’t afford to write clunky, confusing content.
To do that, there are three tricks that work wonders for me.
Once you write your first draft, let it rest a bit. Overnight if you can. You will reset your brain and you’ll be able to see your writing in a more objective way.
Read it out loud. When you do that, you’ll be able to see what flows and what does not. You’ll also realize that some parts sound confusing and don’t make sense.
Give it a visual scan. See if it’s easy to read. Too dense? Missing images? No subheads? This is time to fix it.
Don’t Castrate Your Writing
You might have seen the kind of content big corporations publish. Sterile, boring, non-human language.
All of that just to sound “professional”.
Don’t do that.
People love when they can relate to your writing. When they feel genuine human touch shining out of your article.Their brain likes it.
Use Active Language
Using passive language makes your writing boring and weak. Consider these two sentences:
“The meeting will be held at five and what will be discussed is ‘the sorry state of business writing.”
“I’m reaching out to you because we've been in the process of developing a new marketing system geared towards the generation of leads for home service businesses.“
Do you see how dreadful these sentences are? And they can actually be fixed pretty quickly with active language.
For example:
“The meeting’s at five. Subject: ‘the sorry state of business writing’.”
“Reaching out because we generate leads for home service businesses. Would that be of interest to you?“
To the point, concise, direct.
Tell a Story
Back in the days when we were still living in caves, we would sit around a fire and tell stories.
We are wired to love a good story.
And so are your readers.
Stories are a tool that can help you connect with your audience. And the more connected they are, the higher chance they say “here, take my money”.
The story has to be relatable. You are allowed to make it up, but you can’t do it in an obvious way. It has to be smooth.
Remember, nobody owes you their attention. You must come and take it yourself.
